Getting a Gouda clay pipe

Uma pequena explicação sobre o vídeo, em inglês:

1919 Netherlands. It’s not an Olympic sport but it should be! Skaters from Rotterdam skating the 15 or so miles to Gouda, a famous center of pipe manufacturing. The skaters would buy clay pipes (check out the curves!) that they would then affix to themselves, sometimes on their backs, before skating back home. The goal was to get home first with a pipe in one piece. The pipes were slipcast.

One of the oldest traditions on clay pipes is the so-called "getting a Gouda clay pipe". During winter when the rivers and lakes were frozen, many men went ice skating to Gouda. When the arrived theybought a clay pipe which was sewn on their back. The first one toarrive back in the village was welcomed like a hero. The real proffesionals took a so-called office-pipe, which was over 50 centimeter long. To bring it back undamaged was an act of trueheroism.  Until this day people ice skate to get their clay pipe. The only difference is that they go back by car or train and that women and children also join.” -Ad van Bever .
